ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All candidates applying for EMT or First Responder certification must meet the following requirements to be eligible for Kansas certification:

  1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.

  2. Successfully complete, within the last two years, a Kansas-approved National Standard EMT-Basic or First Responder Training Program, as developed and promulgated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

  3. Truthfully complete the felony statement on the applications and submit the appropriate documentation, if necessary.

  4. All candidates are required to successfully complete all aspects of the practical and written examinations.

FOR PRACTICAL EXAMINATION RE-TEST

  1. Bring to the examination site some form of personal photo identification.

  2. Bring to the examination site your Board of EMS application / Examination Results.

  • Any candidate without all of the above materials may be denied examination by the site coordinator or written examination proctor.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The practical examination process consists of three (3) separate stations. The process is a formal test of "hands-on" abilities and knowledge, rather than a teaching, coaching or remedial training session.

All candidates are urged to review all practical examination criteria before attempting the examination.

The candidate must demonstrate an acceptable level of competency in each of the following stations.

  1. Patient Assessment (EMT & FR)

    • Candidates will be required to perform a "hands-on" head to toe physical assessment for the given medical or trauma scenario. A simulated redio report is given at the end of the station.

  2. Airway Management (EMT)

    • The candidate must demonstrate a trauma airway maneuver, simple airway adjunct, bag-valve-mask device with supplementary oxygen, simple oxygen adjunct and suctioning technique.

  3. Fracture Management (EMT)

    • Consisting of three sections each candidate must demonstrate the proper application of a splinting or immobilization device.

    • Half-Spine Immobilization - Each candidate must demonstrate appropriate care for a patient and application of a spinal immobilization device. Candidates have a choice between the KED and Kansas Short Spineboard Devices.

    • Sling and swathe - Each candidate must demonstrate appropriate care for a patient and application of a sling and swathe to an upper extremity.

    • HARE Traction - Each candidate must demonstrate appropriate care for a patient and application of a HARE traction device to a lower extremity.

  4. Airway Management (FR)

    • The candidate must demonstrate a trauma airway maneuver, simple airway adjunct, and a bag-valve-mask device with supplementary oxygen.

  5. Fracture Management (FR)

    • Sling and swathe - Each candidate must demonstrate appropriate care for a patient and application of a sling and swathe to an upper extremity.

    • Pillow splint - Each candidate must demonstrate appropriate care for a patient and application of a pillow splint to an ankle.

Examination Time - Candidate are allowed 20 minutes for the combined Patient Assessment and Airway Management Stations. Twenty (20) minutes are allowed for the Fracture Management Station.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How long do I have to complete the examination process?

    • You have two years from your date of last class, however, the written and practical results are valid for only 12 months.

  2. How many times can I take the written examination?

    • The Board of EMS allows candidates to attempt each station three times.

  3. How long will it be before I hear about my official practical examination results?

    • Please allow 15 days for the examination check-sheets to be reviewed and the results mailed to you.

  4. How do I arrange for a re-test of the practical examination?

    • You will need to pick up a blue form, fill it out, and mail it to the regional office where you desire to examine with a $40.00 check or money order made out to the appropriate Regional EMS Council. The regional representative will contact you about dates and locations.

  5. Once I pass the practical examination, how long before I hear about the written?

    • Please allow three to five weeks for the examination to be scored and the results mailed to you. Written examinations can only be scored after you pass the practical.
