ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All candidates applying for EMT-Defibrillator or EMT-Intermediate must meet the following requirements to be eligible for Kansas certification:

  1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.

  2. Successfully complete, a Kansas Approved Training Program.

  3. Candidates are required to successfully complete all sections of the Kansas approved written and practical examination.

  4. Must be certified as an EMT.

  5. Truthfully complete the felony statement on the applications and submit the appropriate documentation, if necessary.

FOR YOUR INITIAL EMT-D and/or EMT-I EXAMINATION

  1. Bring to the examination site your signed (I/C signature) BEMS Application for Examination/Certification.

  2. Bring to the examination site some form of personal photo identification.

  • Any candidate without all of the above materials may be denied examination by the site coordinator or written examination proctor.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

EMT-Defibrillator Written Examination
The written examination, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions, is based on objectives identified in the EMT-Defibrillator Curriculum. The number of questions in each area are as follows:

Each candidate must realize an overall score of 70% to successfully complete the written examination.
Candidates will be allowed one hour and 40 minutes to complete the written examination.

EMT-Defibrillator Practical Examination

The EMT-Defibrillator practical examination consists of two (2) stations:

Dynamic Cardiology - This station is designed to evaluate the candidate's ability to recognize and treat cardiac arrhythmias in accordance with the current American Heart Association Guidelines. In this station, the candidate will be evaluated using the defibrillation manikin and the ECG monitor/defibrillator. Three (3) separate arrhythmias will be presented in which the candidate must act as the team leader and voice their interpretation of each arrhythmia as well as all basic and advanced life support interventions. The candidate must physically demonstrate and actually perform all electrical interventions necessary throughout the station. Candidates have eight (8) minutes to complete the station.

Static Cardiology - This station is designed to evaluate the candidate's ability to recognize and verbally treat cardiac arrhythmias in accordance with current American Heart Association Guidelines. Three (3) separate static ECG tracings with associated patient information will be presented. The candidate will need to verbally inform the evaluator the interpretation and interventions to be provided to the patient. The candidate may pass on any card and come back to it, if time permits. Candidates will have six (6) minutes to complete the station

EMT-Intermediate Written Examination
The written examination, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions, is based on objectives identified in the EMT-Intermediate Curriculum. The number of questions in each area are as follows:

EMT-Intermediate Practical Examination

The EMT-Intermediate practical examination consists of four (4) stations:

Ventilatory Management - This station is designed to evaluate the candidates ability to provide immediate and aggressive ventilatory assistance to an apneic patient who has no other injuries. The candidate is required to perform sequentially all procedures and adjuncts, from simple airway maneuvers to endotracheal intubation.

Dual Lumen Airway Device (Combitube) - This station is designed to evaluate the candidates ability to provide immediate and aggressive ventilatory assistance to an apneic patient who has no other injuries. The candidate is required to sequentially demonstrate all procedures, from simple maneuvers and adjuncts to the placement of a Combitube.

Intravenous Therapy - This station is designed to evaluate the candidates ability to establish and discontinue an intravenous line. The candidate will be required to establish a patent IV line in a maximum of three attempts within a six minute time limit.

Phlebotomy - The station is designed to evaluate the candidates ability to perform phlebotomy just as in the field. The candidate is required to fill one vacutainer with simulated blood in a maximum of three attempts within a six minute time limit.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Who schedules my examination?

    • The Board of EMS has responsibility for scheduling and administering all Advanced Life Support Examinations in Kansas. This includes the EMT-I, EMT-D and MICT levels of certification.

  2. How many times can I take the examination?

    • The Board of EMS allows candidates to attempt each part (written & practical) three times.

  3. How long will it be before I hear about my written examination results?

    • Please allow two weeks for the examinations to be scored and the results mailed to you.

  4. How do I arrange for a re-test?

    • If you need to re-test any portion of the EMT-D examination, information will be included with your results. DO NOT contact the regions for EMT-D re-tests.

  5. Once I pass the examination, how do I get my Kansas certification card?

    • It will come automatically within a few days after you receive results indicating you have passed the examination.
