Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services Emergency Medical Technician & First Responder Certification Examination
 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All candidates applying for EMT or First Responder certification must meet the following requirements to be eligible for Kansas certification:

  1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.

  2. Successfully complete, within the last two years, a Kansas-approved National Standard EMT-Basic or First Responder Training Program, as developed and promulgated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

  3. Candidates are required to successfully complete all components of the Kansas approved practical examination and the National Registry Written examination.

  4. Truthfully complete the felony statement on the applications and submit the appropriate documentation, if necessary.

FOR YOUR INITIAL EXAMINATION

  1. Bring to the examination site the completed National Registry Application (EMT ONLY).

  2. Bring to the examination site a cashier's check, money order or departmental check for $20 (Both EMT & First Responder) made out to the National Registry of EMTs. National Registry will not accept personal checks.

  3. Bring to the examination site a check or money order made out to the Board of EMS for $20 (First Responder) or $50 (EMT)

  4. Bring to the examination site some form of personal photo identification.

  5. Bring to the examination site your Board of EMS application for examination/certification.

  • Any candidate without all of the above materials may be denied examination by the site coordinator or written examination proctor.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

EMT Basic Written Examination
The written examination, consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions, is based on tasks identified in the EMT-Basic Practice analysis. The range of questions in each subtest are as follows:

Each candidate must realize an overall score of 70% (105 items correct to pass the examination.
Candidates are given two and one-half hours to complete the examination.

FIRST RESPONDER WRITTEN EXAMINATION

The written examination, consisting of 100 multiple choice questions is based upon the tasks identified within the scope of practice of a first responder curriculum as developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The range of questions in each subtest are as follows:

Each candidate must realize an overall score of 70% (70 items correct to pass the examination.
Candidates are given one hour and forty minutes to complete the examination.

PRACTICAL EXAMINATION

The practical examination process consists of three (3) separate stations. The process is a formal test of "hands-on" abilities and knowledge. All candidates are urged to review the practical examination criteria before attempting the examination.

The candidate must demonstrate an acceptable level of competency in each of the following stations:

  1. Patient Assessment
  2. Airway & Breathing
  3. Circulation

Examination Time - Candidates are allowed twenty (20) minutes for the combined Patient Assessment and Airway Management Stations. Twenty (20) minutes are allowed for the Fracture Management Station


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How long do I have to complete the examination process?

    • You have two years from your date of last class, however, the written and practical results are valid for only 12 months.

  2. How many times can I take the written and practical examination?

    • The Board of EMS allows candidates to attempt each component of the examination three times.

  3. How long will it be before I hear about my results?

    • Your should have your official practical skill results within ten days of the examination. Once you have passed all aspects of the practical, your written examination is sent to National Registry for scoring. please allow 3-5 weeks for National Registry to return results.

  4. Once I pass the written examination, how do I get my Kansas certification card?

    • It will come automatically within a few days after you receive you National Registry written results indicating you have passed the examination.

  5. If I fail a practical skills station, will I be told what I did wrong?

    • No, the exam is not intended to be teaching, coaching or remedial training.
